BVC Update - August 10th, 2010
We have only just passed our 6 month anniversary as a cycling club in Alamance County and already we are making big waves in our local community through the dedication and hard work of our club members and the awesome support of our sponsors.
We have had quite an eventful first 6 months and the next 6 months promises to be even busier as we look to our upcoming events for 2010.
Upcoming Community Outreaches
In conjunction with our sponsors, the Burlington Velo Club is embarking on a community wide initiative this summer to reach out to kids with the purpose of educating them on cycling safety and to do minor maintenance on and repairs to their bicycles as the new school year starts. This will be a free event for all kids (18 and under).
We plan to host a local city wide bicycle clinic for kids where we will:
- perform routine maintenance on children’s bicycles (including lubricating moving parts, adjusting bike fit, adjusting brakes etc.)
- perform minor repairs on children’s bicycles (including repairing punctures, replacing tubes, repairing faulty brakes etc.)
- educate on cycling safety (including the importance of helmets, correct clothing, safe riding techniques, laws of the road etc.)
- donate helmets to the children who need them.
Date: Saturday, August 21st, 2010
Time: 10:00am – 3:00pm
Venue: Exchange Building at Burlington City Park in Burlington, NC.
Cycles de Oro, an award winning bicycle shop in Greensboro, NC and sponsor of the BVC has already agreed to donate tubes, equipment and technical expertise to support this great outreach event.
Legs for Life 5K
Alamance Regional Medical Center (ARMC) is hosting their annual Legs for Life 5km running race on Saturday, October 16th, 2010 in Burlington, NC. ARMC is also the gold sponsor of the BVC and we are honored to have been asked to support ARMC as cycling marshalls for the event. Our primary responsibility would be to lead out the race runners on our bicycles and indicate the route in such a way. We will also act as course marshalls and traffic controllers as needed to ensure a successful and safe event. Race registration starts at 7:45am and the race starts at 9:00am. Contact Deon Louw for more information if you would like to particpate as a ride leader for this event.
Supporting the Fight againt Childhood Obesity
The BVC is honored to support Get Healthy Guilford's annual Tour de Health ride in 2010. Get Healthy Guilford’s annual Tour de Health fundraising ride will be held on Saturday, October 23rd. Proceeds will benefit the Coalition’s work to fight the childhood obesity epidemic. The BVC will be responsible for staffing and hosting a rest stop at North East Guilford Park in Gibsonville, NC. The event will start and end at the Grove Winery in Gibsonville, NC, and will tour beautiful farm and wine country of Eastern Guilford County during peak leaf season. For more information you may contact Rejina Allen, our VP of Event Planning, or you can visit their website at www.GetHealthyGuilford.org.
BVC Club Helmets
You may have noticed that several of our members have been riding with their new club helmets (pictured right). The helmet is the Bell Array. The yellow and black theme of the helmet compliments our cycling kit perfectly. The helmets sell for $80 each which is a huge club discount. For those of you who did not get in on the initial order of cycling helmets, you have another opportunity to order yours now. Contact Deon Louw for more information about the next order of club helmets.
You can view all our upcoming events on the Upcoming Events tab on the right ride of our website. You can also visit our Facebook page for up to date information on our club activities.
Keep the rubber side down, the wind in your back and a helmet on your head.

We are excited about our beginner rider program. If you are new to cycling or have not cycled in a while, please join us on Monday and Thursday evenings at 6:00pm at the parking lot of The Fat Frogg restaurant in Elon. We use these 2 times to dedicate to beginner riders. The routes we ride are safe and relatively flat to maximize the beginner rider experience. We also offer riding tips related to riding safely in traffic and answer any general questions you have about cycling. We are not an intimidating bunch at all and we will ride at a speed that is very comfortable for the whole group. We remember what it felt like the first few times we were out on the road. So if you're new to cycling or just need a refresher ride, please feel free to join up with our beginner rides. All ages are welcome. Please remember your helmets.
